The Clio series is based on principles shared among quite a few manufactures of high end cables. Solid, pure silver conductors, sheathed in oversized Teflon tubes (to produce an Air/Teflon dielectric), twisted together or braided into a round LITZ formation to produce the very basic cable structure. Such basic principles have being adopted by many smaller or larger manufacturers and numerous DIY recipes have been developed around them.
Truth is that there is (and should be) much criticism on the claims being made to support the superior characteristics of such basic cable designs. On the other hand the simplicity of the design and the selection of materials used by many vendors and manufacturers has resulted to some very high performance cables that can be produced and sold at very reasonable prices.
In our opinion many of the claims and trends around solid core air/Teflon constructions demonstrate a lack of relevant background and understanding of how analogue cables work and a great focus on the marketing of a product in order to keep up with the competition. Regardless, the final product in many of the cases tends to be quite successful.
Our Clio series of cables, aims at using the above principles and incorporate them in coherent designs that ensure consistency in performance but also a durable construction with suitable mechanical characteristics and a professional finish.
First of al our Clio cables are not random formations of wires whose performance relies on wishful thinking and they are not being analyzed and evaluated solely on the grounds of listening tests and personal opinions. These cables do what they do because their designs are justified by consistent values. They are not a braiding show off of multiple conductors. Clio cables are built with precision, based on accurate designs to produce a desirable balance of inductance, capacitance and resistance with measurable values and fixed figures. Such electrical characteristics depend on the size and number of the conductors, the dielectric among them, their proximity and alignment. There is no “correct” size or “correct proximity” as many like to claim. The suitability of each choice depends on the entire architecture of the cable. But having said this, there are occasions where the “wrong choices” can be quite obvious even by simply assessing a basic design idea.
Shielding is another feature which is either entirely disregarded as unnecessary or applied in a manner that shows little understanding on how it works and of the implications it may have. The high quality EMI and RFI shielding we use on our cables is a rarity among audio cables. Proper shielding requires a lot more work and adds up significantly to the costs of a cable. For the shielding to work as intended without having a negative impact, each cable design needs to be based on a precise architecture that takes into account all of the parameters. Such a process is a lot more complex than simply braiding Teflon silver wires and inserting them in a copper braid. It requires constant measurements and accuracy on the way each part of the cable is formed and applied.
The quality of construction. Clio are professionally finished unlike most of the cables of similar structures. Our focus on durability as well as a commitment in producing user friendly cables has resulted in handmade products that share the precision, elegance and durable design of high end factory made cables. Their entire construction is very well thought with the outer layers of the cable supporting the internal structure. PTFE sealing layers are being applied onto the metallic parts of the cable as well as on the low density layers of insulation in order to offer mechanical support, sealing against the environmental impact (moisture, temperature changes, physical contact and abrasion) to prevent aging, corrosion and rise of the dielectric impact of he cable. Fine details that are proven to be very valuable over the lifetime of the cable.
